Brian Mast, U.S. Representative for Florida

Brian Mast

U.S. Representative for Florida

Brian Jeffrey Mast was born in July 1980 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. After high school, he became a combat engineer in the U.S. Army Reserve. He attended Palm Beach Atlantic University and the American Military University. He earned an undergraduate degree from Harvard University Extension School.

During his service in a special operations explosive ordnance disposal unit in Afghanistan, Mast stepped on an IED. The injuries from the explosion required both legs to be amputated, and he lost an index finger. He served in the Department of Homeland Security as an explosives specialist and as an instructor for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.

Mast was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, assuming office in January 2017.

Mast is married to Brianna, and they have four children. He is a Protestant.

In the News…

Representatives Brian Mast of Florida, Bill Huizenga of Michigan, and Mike Waltz of Florida sent a letter to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin regarding the “deficiencies in the Defense Department’s protocols“ after hearing from service personnel who were not provided absentee ballots to cast their votes.

They wrote, “Our nation’s brave men and women in uniform brought to our attention that there has been inadequate education at the administrative level on how to register to vote, request an absentee ballot, and fill in a federal write-in absentee ballot if their state-issued ballot does not arrive in time.”

The congressmen continued, “Other service members also stated that when a request for a federal write-in absentee ballot was made, they were told the base’s stockpile of such ballots was depleted and had not been replenished.”

Congressman Mast stated that, though the Biden-Harris administration claims “to care about democracy,“ they “failed to plan accordingly to facilitate the right to vote for every single one of our nation’s brave men and women in uniform. Our nation’s elite warriors deserve to have every opportunity to vote for the next commander-in-chief, especially since that person will be making life-and-death decisions for our troops.”
